Prime Lambs
There was a smaller entry of Prime Lambs on the market this week with the national drop in price and many from the local area busy with the current Gimmer Lamb Sales. Suffolk prime lambs sold to a top of £94 from Helen Newton, Low Levens for heavy weight lambs, with others selling to £89 from R & J Dodgson, Natland. Texel lambs topped at £89 from JG & PH Thompson, Selside many pens of good heavy weight and better conformation lambs are still selling around the eighty pound mark. Mule lambs sold to a top of £75 from M Robinson, Low Gill with Mashams to £74 from BD Gill, Ingelton with all Mule and Mashams forward selling to an average in excess of £70.
The overall market average was 162p/kg.
Cast Sheep
There was a smaller entry of cast ewes on the market with just over 300 forward with there being a lot of plain and lean ewes on offer. Fitter Continental and Suffolk ewes selling in excess of the £80 mark topping at £90 for Texel Ewes from TW Gorst, Cook. There was Mule ewes breaking the £60 barrier but a shortage of weight on offer, selling to a top of £64, again, from TW Gorst. A slightly better entry of horned ewes this week, saw fitter sheep sell in excess of the £40 mark, with Swaledales topping at £52 from J & J Postlethwaite, Howgill, with Rough Fells selling to £49 from Fishwick Bros, Long Sleddale.
